Don’t Let Pride Be Your Guide!

The phrase “Don’t Let Pride Be Your Guide!” came to me while reading Philippians 2:3-4. In these verses, Paul encourages believers to reject selfish ambition, stop seeking to impress others, and instead walk in humility by considering the needs of others as well as their own.

What God showed me through this passage was later confirmed by my pastor’s message on Sunday. It reminded me that as believers, we must regularly examine our motives. Are we serving, speaking, giving, and making decisions from a pure heart that honors God, or are we allowing pride to influence us?

Pride can be subtle. It does not always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it appears as stubbornness, defensiveness, self-reliance, the need to be right, or the desire for recognition and praise. If we are not careful, pride can slowly guide our decisions and pull us away from God’s will.

God Is Not Pleased With Pride

Scripture makes it clear that God opposes pride but gives grace to those who humble themselves.

James 4:6 teaches that God continually extends grace to the humble while resisting the proud. Humility positions us to receive God’s help, wisdom, and favor. Pride, however, creates barriers that hinder our spiritual growth.

Proverbs 16:5 reminds us that the Lord detests pride. This strong language shows us how seriously God views a proud heart. He desires that we depend on Him rather than ourselves.

The Bible also lists pride among the things God hates. Proverbs 6:16-19 describes several sinful behaviors that flow from a heart that is not surrendered to God, including proud eyes, dishonesty, evil intentions, and actions that create division among people.

When we truly understand God’s view of pride, we realize the importance of guarding our hearts daily.

Listen to Wise Counsel

One of the quickest ways pride reveals itself is through an unwillingness to listen.

Proverbs 1:5-7 teaches that wise people continue learning and seek wise counsel. Those who fear the Lord understand the value of instruction and correction.

Pride says:

  • “I already know.”
  • “No one can tell me anything.”
  • “I don’t need advice.”

Humility says:

  • “Lord, teach me.”
  • “Help me learn.”
  • “I am willing to receive correction.”

God often uses pastors, mentors, family members, friends, and fellow believers to help guide us. Sometimes the truth we need to hear is not always comfortable, but it can be exactly what God is using to protect us and help us grow.

A humble heart welcomes godly correction because it desires God’s best more than personal pride.

Ask God to Examine Your Heart

Jeremiah 17:9-10 reminds us that the human heart can be deceptive. We may think our motives are pure when hidden pride is actually present.

The good news is that God sees what we cannot see. He searches our hearts, examines our motives, and reveals areas that need His healing and correction.

Instead of asking God to change everyone around us, we should first ask Him to search us.

Questions we can ask ourselves include:

  • Am I seeking God’s glory or my own?
  • Do I become defensive when corrected?
  • Do I listen to wise counsel?
  • Am I willing to admit when I am wrong?
  • Do I genuinely care about others, or am I focused only on myself?

When we allow God to examine our hearts, He lovingly reveals areas that need transformation.

Humility Looks Like Jesus

Jesus is the perfect example of humility. Although He was the Son of God, He chose to serve others, love others, and ultimately lay down His life for humanity.

Jesus never operated from pride. He walked in complete obedience to His Father and demonstrated what true humility looks like.

As followers of Christ, we are called to follow His example by serving others, listening to godly instruction, and surrendering our lives to God’s will.

Humility does not mean thinking less of yourself. It means thinking of yourself less and keeping your focus on God and the people He has called you to serve.

Reflection

While my pastor was preaching, God dealt with my heart about the importance of listening and avoiding pride. I asked the Lord to help me recognize areas where pride may be influencing my thoughts, attitudes, or actions.

I am also grateful for the people God has placed around me who are willing to speak truth in love. Wise counsel is a gift from God, and humility allows us to receive it.

Today, take a moment to ask yourself:

Is pride guiding me, or is God guiding me?

When we humble ourselves before the Lord, He gives us the grace, wisdom, and strength we need to walk in His ways.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to be the perfect example of humility and obedience. Forgive me for the times I have been selfish, prideful, unwilling to listen, or leaning on my own understanding instead of trusting You.

Lord, search my heart and reveal anything that does not please You. Expose every hidden motive, attitude, and thought that needs to be surrendered to You. Help me to walk in humility, receive correction with grace, and seek Your wisdom above my own opinions.

Thank You for placing godly people in my life who speak truth and provide wise counsel. Give me ears to hear and a heart that is willing to learn and grow.

I humble myself before You today, trusting that You will lift me up in Your perfect timing. Help me to reflect the character of Jesus in all that I say and do.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
