I think about my father often, who went home to be with the Lord on May 16, 2025. I remember how he faithfully cared for our family. He provided for my mom, who stayed home to care for us, and for all five of my siblings and me.
My father taught us the Word of God through songs, family Bible studies, and everyday moments. He would even pause a movie to share godly wisdom and life lessons. He included us in praise and worship at home and traveled with us to camp meetings to help increase our knowledge of God.
My father disciplined us with love and taught us through discipleship. One of the things I admired most about him was his humility. He was willing to admit when he was wrong , dealt with pride and ask for our forgiveness. He often said, “You all pray for me.” His example showed us that true strength comes through humility and dependence upon God.
Many of us have been blessed to experience great fathers through our own dads or through father figures God has placed in our lives.
Yet, there is no Father greater than our Heavenly Father.
God loved us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins so that we would not be separated from Him for eternity. All we have to do is confess our sins, believe that Jesus died and rose again, receive Him into our hearts, and declare with our mouths that Jesus is Lord. Through faith in Him, we are saved.
God, Abraham, and His Son Isaac
Genesis 22:1-13 (NLT)
Some time later, God tested Abraham’s faith. “Abraham!” God called.
“Yes,” he replied. “Here I am.”
“Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac. Then he chopped wood for a fire for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had told him about.
On the third day of their journey, Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
“Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told the servants. “The boy and I will travel a little farther. We will worship there, and then we will come right back.”
So Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac’s shoulders, while he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them walked on together, Isaac turned to Abraham and said, “Father?”
“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.
“We have the fire and the wood,” the boy said, “but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?”
“God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham answered. And they both walked on together.
When they arrived at the place where God had told him to go, Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. Then he tied his son, Isaac, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice.
At that moment the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”
“Yes,” Abraham replied. “Here I am!”
“Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said. “Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.”
Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh, which means “The Lord Will Provide.”
Reflection
In this account, we see both a father’s faith and a son’s trust. Abraham trusted God enough to obey His guidance, even when he did not understand the outcome. Isaac trusted his father enough to follow him up the mountain.
God provided for Abraham as his Heavenly Father, and Isaac trusted the guidance of his earthly father. Their story reminds us that our Heavenly Father is faithful to guide and provide for His children. He often uses earthly fathers and father figures to demonstrate His love, wisdom, correction, and care.
A good father provides. A loving father guides. Our Heavenly Father does both perfectly.
Whether your earthly father is still with you or has gone home to be with the Lord, the love, wisdom, and godly example they shared can continue to impact generations. Most importantly, we can place our trust in our Heavenly Father, who will never leave us nor forsake us.
Prayer
Father God, thank You for the time You blessed me to have with my dad. Even though he is no longer here with me, his love for You and the wisdom he shared continue to live on in my heart.
Thank You for the example he set and for the many lessons he taught our family. I am grateful for my earthly father, and I am even more grateful for my Heavenly Father.
Help me to trust You completely for guidance and provision. Strengthen my faith to follow You as Abraham did and to trust You in every season of life.
