It is easy to take moms for granted. Every mother’s household and journey are different. Mothers give birth to another human being or multiple children and often carry many responsibilities at once. Many prepare meals, clean the home, work outside the home, care for relationships, nurture their children emotionally, and handle countless other responsibilities behind the scenes.
Honor your mother and the mothers in your life while they are here, because once they are gone, they cannot hear the words you wish you had spoken or see the things you wish you had done for them.
July 24, 2024, marked two years since my mom passed away.
I remember how happy she was to serve others. She faithfully took care of our home and made sure we were cared for. She went on school trips with me and my siblings, walked with us to the library, and took us downtown to walk by the river. We would go shopping together downtown, and even after we became adults and moved away from home, my mom would still call and stop by to check on us.
My sister and I even planned trips with her because she was truly a joy to be around. I thank God that I have no regrets because I honored her, appreciated her, and told her I loved her before she passed away.
Honor Mothers
Ephesians 6:1-3 (NLT)
“Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. ‘Honor your father and mother.’ This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, ‘things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.’”
God places great importance on honoring parents. Honor is not only shown through words, but also through actions, patience, gratitude, respect, and care.
1 Timothy 5:2 (NLT)
“Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters.”
God also teaches us to honor and respect older women as mother figures, showing kindness, gentleness, and wisdom in how we speak to them and treat them.
Romans 13:7
“Give honor where honor is due.”
Honor should be given to those who have sacrificed, nurtured, loved, and poured into our lives.
Proverbs 31:28
“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”
A godly woman and mother should be appreciated and spoken of with gratitude and honor.
Proverbs 23:22
“Listen to your father, who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.”
As parents grow older, they should not be neglected, ignored, or treated harshly. They still deserve love, respect, patience, and honor.
Reflection
Honor mothers while they are here.
Even if your mother was not perfect, she still gave you life. No parent is flawless, and many mothers carried burdens, struggles, and hardships we may never fully understand.
Do not take mothers for granted — whether it is your birth mother, grandmother, stepmother, spiritual mother, or another woman who has been a mother figure in your life.
Show appreciation while they are still here. Sometimes honor is shown through:
- A phone call
- Spending quality time together
- Words of encouragement
- Patience and understanding
- Helping them when they need support
- Giving flowers, gifts, or thoughtful gestures
- Simply being present
Love and honor should be expressed while people can still receive it.
Prayer
Lord, help me give honor where honor is due. Teach me to treat older women with respect and honor as mothers, showing wisdom, patience, and love even when I may not always agree with them.
Your Word says that when we honor our father and mother, things will go well for us and we will live long upon the earth. Help me walk in obedience to that instruction.
I repent for taking my mother and the people in my life for granted. Teach me to value and appreciate those You have placed around me while they are still here.
Help me to show honor through my words, actions, love, patience, and presence. Thank You, God, for using mothers and mother figures to display Your nurturing love and care.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
